CNMG and CCMT identify different turning insert families. A matching general shape or a similar-looking corner does not establish that they fit the same holder or suit the same operation. Begin with the complete insert reference and the holder documentation.
Compare the actual application
| Check | CNMG family | CCMT family |
|---|---|---|
| Catalog starting point | CutNexo lists this family for general turning and facing. | CutNexo lists this family for light turning and finishing, including suitable internal applications. |
| Required matching data | Full insert designation, holder seat and clamping system. | Full insert designation, holder seat and clamping system. |

What the short name does not tell you
The four-letter family name is not a complete specification. Size, thickness, corner information and supplier-specific grade or chipbreaker references also affect selection. Confirm the full designation against a dimensioned drawing rather than inferring every measurement from an online family title.
The CNMG product page currently lists CNMG 120404, CNMG 120408 and CNMG 120412 options. The CCMT family has its own options. Do not substitute one family into the other's holder without a documented compatible assembly.
Holder and setup checks
- Read the exact holder code and obtain its insert specification.
- Check seat dimensions, support, clamping parts and mounting direction.
- Confirm bore access or external feature clearance for the full assembly.
- Review workpiece support, tool overhang and the intended operation.
Choose grade and chipbreaker from conditions
Even within one family, the workpiece and cut determine the appropriate option. Record material grade and hardness, interrupted or continuous cutting, feed and depth of cut, coolant and the present result. An insert family name does not supply a universal speed or establish cross-brand equivalence.
Prepare a useful replacement inquiry
Send the existing insert label, a clear photograph, the holder code and the machining conditions. If a drawing is available, include the required dimensions and surface requirements. State whether the aim is to replace an unavailable item, improve chip control or address a finish problem.
Ask CutNexo for insert selection support or browse the carbide insert families. Keep the selected insert, holder and cutting data together in the setup record so later changes remain traceable.
